Music Theory

Music-making is a communal activity. Few musicians aspire to play only for themselves - music comes to life through shared experience and collaboration. Music theory gives us a language to communicate with others. It strengthens chamber music rehearsals, supports accurate intonation, and deepens each musician’s understanding of how their part relates to the whole. It is essential.

Our curriculum is a distillation of ABRSM, AP Music Theory, and college level music theory presented in a user-friendly fashion that teaches students to develop a deeper understanding of topics while preparing them for standardized tests or to test out of college theory and aural skills classes (potentially saving them up to eight semesters of classes in some cases!).

Students will be assigned to one of three theory sections based on a diagnostic exam administered at the start of the year. No prior knowledge of music theory is needed - Opus 1 welcomes students of all levels!
