Leyendas: An Andean Walkabout Program Notes, by Joshua Segraves

The next piece you'll hear is by Gabriela Lena Frank and comes from Leyendas (or Legends): An Andean Walkabout, inspired by Peruvian culture and Andean folk music. We're playing the sixth movement, Coqueteos, meaning "flirtations."

At first, we struggled with this piece, but we grew to love it. For us, it tells the story of two spirited characters: Enrique and Rosalina.

Imagine Enrique, a proud, matador-like figure, bursting into the village square, full of energy and charm. A fiesta erupts around him, but he keeps his confident edge.

Then, the cello and first violin sing out a romantic melody as Enrique sees Rosalina. She enters with grace and pride, voiced through a duet between the cello and viola. She won't fall for him so easily.

The dance returns, more joyful now, as the town celebrates this new love. The piece ends in a whirlwind of rhythm, storming guitars (in the inner voices) and pizzicato.

We hope you enjoy this lovely legend.
