Why Opus 1?

We are devoted exclusively to chamber music. It’s no afterthought. We’ve learned from our experience coaching in and managing summer chamber music programs the importance of meticulously matching students with colleagues of compatible personality, ability, and age. We take the same care in choosing repertoire for ensembles. Without these two elements working to a student’s advantage, frustration can be inevitable.

We are experienced, accomplished chamber musicians – as both performers and educators (see faculty for more information). We have appeared in concert and given instruction nationally and internationally. Being centered in Houston, we look forward to teaching by example and inviting Opus 1 students to join us at our performances. We’ll also encourage you to become involved in the energetic professional chamber music culture in Houston. Come to other concerts with us! We’ll introduce you to the great musicians working in and passing through Houston and experience their performances together, all while becoming acquainted with the chamber music repertoire.

What you can expect every trimester:

  • 8 weekly coachings with Dr. Marisa Ishikawa or Matt Lammers, Opus 1 founders and faculty.

  • A coaching with our trimester’s guest faculty. Our guest coaches are among the most renowned, influential chamber musicians and teachers in the country.

  • A performance on the Opus 1 Chamber Music School end of trimester concert.

  • Social events for the Opus 1 community and families

  • Long-term mentorship and support from the Opus 1 faculty.

In addition, independent rehearsals are a crucial part of developing chamber music skills and enjoying the experience. Ensembles are expected to rehearse weekly, on their own, in preparation for coachings.
